Author's Notes - February 2004              [Meet the Author] There's a lot going on with "The Pearls of the Stone Man"! I was very happy to hear, on January 14, 2004, that the first Champion Press edition of the book sold out over a year ahead of schedule. The second edition, which includes 52 minor edits and a new font for Anne's letters, ships in February, 2004. The story behind how my book was picked up for a movie is one straight out of Hollywood! In December of 2002 I watched a Christmas movie on the Hallmark Channel, "Silent Night". As a history teacher I was enthralled with this true-story based movie and I emailed Hallmark, asking for more information. They forwarded my message to Steven Jay Rubin of Fast Carrier Pictures (affiliated with Showtime/Paramount/Viacom), who noticed my email signature (which features information on "Pearls"). A month after receiving the book he informed us that he wanted to do the movie. In June of 2003 contracts were signed. Much to my surprise, Steve asked me to do the script. I consented, on one condition - that I write a sample first. The agreement was that he would decide if I "had what it takes" to do the project after reading the sample, since I'd never done a script before. Steve supplied a great piece of software for the project and I spent the summer of 2003 clacking away on my computer. In the beginning of August, after Steve had finished reading my sample work, he informed me that he wanted me to do the entire work. The first draft of the screenplay, called "Script B", was finished in mid-September of 2003. Steve and I just completed the editing of this volume, which will now be named "Script C". What's next? Well, check this page often! The movie is in the production pipeline!
